Heavy rains have triggered severe landslides in South East St Mary, affecting many communities and schools within the constituency.

On Thursday, the Broadgate main road was blocked forcing vehicles to divert through alternate routes, causing major traffic disruptions on the thoroughfare between Kingston and St Mary.

In response, Christopher Brown, People’s National Party (PNP) parliamentary candidate for South East St Mary, voiced concern over the delayed road maintenance efforts by the current Member of Parliament Dr Norman Dunn. “It’s unfortunate that only now, in an election cycle, plans are announced to repair roads that have long been in deplorable condition. For years, residents have voiced their distress to no avail, and now they are being asked to be patient,” Brown said.

Brown highlighted that while Broadgate has gained media attention, other communities—such as Rosemount, Brainerd, Long Road, Camberwell, Georges Hope, Epsom, Belfield Line, Tinsbury, Lunafield, Mount Vernon, Luna and many others—also suffer from deteriorating road surfaces.

“These rains have further disrupted lives and livelihood. Some communities have been literally at a standstill for years because of the sad and poor state of the roads,” he continued. “Residents in these communities deserve better. Roads have become a nightmare to navigate, with rising fares as vehicle operators face increased maintenance costs. Immediate and thorough action is critical to prevent further harm.”
